Green Bay Sail & Paddle began in 2001 with a vision to promote youth and family engagement with our community’s waterways. Established as a nonprofit in 2016, our mission remains centered on creating opportunities for everyone—regardless of means or ability - to enjoy sailing and kayaking on the Bay of Green Bay.
Our early partnership with International Youth Sailing of Oshkosh launched a one-week introductory sailing program in 2016, introducing 238 youth to the joy of being on the water. The overwhelmingly positive response inspired rapid growth, including the purchase of eight new Hobie® Wave catamarans in 2017, the launch of the Women’s Sailing Series, and the introduction of Adaptive Programming. By the end of that season, more than 1,200 participants had taken part, many returning to continue their sailing journey.
Over the years, generous donors and sponsors have enabled us to offer scholarships and remove financial barriers to participation. We’ve expanded our reach by working with community organizations such as the YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and local schools to broaden access and introduce more families to the water.
In 2018, we increased our fleet capacity and supported major events, including the 2018 Para World Sailing Championships. Our Women’s Series continued to flourish, and we welcomed scouts from across the Midwest to experience sailing on the bay.
In 2024, we launched Adventures in Sailing, a new initiative focused on providing free sailing opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The pilot year demonstrated the program’s power to build community, create meaningful social connections, and open doors for participants who may not otherwise have access to the water. Adventures in Sailing has since become a core part of our mission-driven programming, expanding each year to reach more families, youth, and partner organizations.
Today, Green Bay Sail & Paddle connects people of all ages with the world’s largest freshwater tributary through hands-on learning, confidence-building experiences, and the simple joy of being on the water. We look forward to continuing to expand our impact in the years ahead.
